Rome has a special place in our hearts and seems to hold space in our brain constantly.

The stunning architecture, the food that makes you drool just thinking about it, and the laid-back atmosphere all contribute to what makes this city special.

This guide will help you plan a perfect 3-day trip and help you avoid some of the mistakes that we made.

Is Three Days Enough?

Although technically you could spend a lifetime exploring this city, most people only have a few days.

This is why we’ve compiled everything into an easy-to-follow guide in order to show you the essentials. We’ll cover restaurants, sights, and museums that you absolutely must visit while you’re here in Rome.

Three days is the perfect amount of time to get acquainted with the city and to get to see the highlights of Rome.

Getting to Rome

Before we start day one, we have to get to the city. You have several ways to travel from Fiumicino Airport (FCO) to Rome city center:

  1. Train: The Leonardo Express connects FCO to Termini Station in about 32 minutes, running every 15-30 minutes. Tickets are available at the airport or online.

  2. Bus: Various bus services, like SitBus and Terravision, take you to different parts of Rome. The journey lasts 45-70 minutes, depending on traffic, with regular departures.

  3. Taxi: Taxis are outside the terminal with a fixed fare to the city center, usually around 48 euros. Travel time is 30-60 minutes, depending on traffic.

  4. Private Transfers: You can book a private service for a more comfortable option, often including a driver to help with luggage. Prices vary by provider.

  5. Car Rental: Renting a car is an option if you want to drive around, but be aware that traffic and parking can be challenging in Rome.

  6. Ride-Sharing: Services like Uber and Lyft are also available, but prices and wait times may vary.

Each option has its advantages, so choose what suits your schedule and budget best. We always opt to take the train because it is the best bang for your buck. It isn’t too expensive but it still gets you there quickly.

Day 1: The Absolute Highlights

Day One Itinerary in Rome

Morning

  • Colosseum

    • Start your day early to beat the crowds. Spend about 2 hours exploring the ancient amphitheater, learning about its history and architecture.

Mid-Morning

  • Roman Forum

    • A short walk from the Colosseum, visit the Roman Forum. Allow for about an hour to stroll through the ruins and take in the historical significance.

Lunch

  • Da Enzo al 29

    • Head to Trastevere for lunch at Da Enzo. Enjoy traditional Roman dishes in a cozy setting. Make sure to try the Cacio e Pepe.

Afternoon

  • Piazza Navona

    • After lunch, take a leisurely stroll to Piazza Navona. Admire the beautiful fountains, including the Fountain of the Four Rivers, and take some time to relax in the vibrant square.

  • Pantheon

    • Continue to the Pantheon, a quick walk from Piazza Navona. Spend about 30-45 minutes marveling at its architecture and the impressive dome.

Late Afternoon

  • Trevi Fountain

    • Make your way to the Trevi Fountain. Enjoy the ambiance and take the traditional photo while throwing a coin into the fountain. Plan to spend around 30 minutes here.

Evening

  • Dinner at Dar Poeta

    • Head back to Trastevere to dine at Dar Poeta. Savor their famous pizza in a friendly and lively atmosphere.

Post-Dinner

  • If you’re not completely worn out, make sure to explore the charming streets of Trastevere or relax in Piazza di Santa Maria.

Day 2: Vatican City

Vatican City Itinerary

Morning

  • St. Peter’s Basilica.

    • Explore the grandeur of the Basilica and climb to the dome for a panoramic view of the city.

  • Vatican Museums

    • Spend a few hours exploring the vast collections, including the Raphael Rooms and the Sistine Chapel.

Lunch

  • Pizzarium

    • Enjoy a variety of gourmet pizza slices, featuring fresh ingredients and unique combinations. We loved the eggplant and artichoke pizza!

Afternoon

  • Vatican Gardens

    • After lunch, stroll through the beautiful Vatican Gardens. Consider taking a guided tour to learn about the history and beauty of this serene area.

  • Apostolic Palace

    • Visit the Palatine Gallery, which houses an impressive collection of Renaissance art.

Dinner

  • Colline Emiliane

    • Indulge in traditional Emilian cuisine, with a focus on handmade pasta and regional specialties. This spot was one of Anthony Bourdain’s favorite so we highly suggest a visit.

Day 3: Art and Architecture

Morning:

  • Castel San Angelo.

    • Explore the ancient fortress and enjoy panoramic views of the city from the terrace. Allocate about 1.5 hours for your visit.

  • Campo de’ Fiori.

    • Take in the vibrant market atmosphere and browse the stalls. Feel free to grab a coffee from one of the nearby cafés.

Lunch:

  • Pane e Salame

    • This is the perfect place to savor delicious sandwiches featuring cured meats and cheeses. The relaxed environment is perfect for recharging before the afternoon's activities.

Afternoon:

  • Villa Borghese

    • Take time to explore the beautiful gardens before visiting the museums.

  • Borghese Gallery

    • Spend a couple of hours admiring the impressive collection of Baroque art, including works by Caravaggio, Raphael, and Bernini.

  • Villa Borghese Park

    • You can rent a bike or simply enjoy a peaceful stroll through the gardens.

Dinner:

  • Le Mani in Pasta

    • Indulge in classic Roman dishes, with an emphasis on fresh pasta and local flavors. This restaurant specializes in seafood so make sure to try some with your pasta!

  • Trastevere

    • Le Mani in Pasta is in Trastevere so to end your trip we highly suggest you soak in the ambiance of this neighborhood one more time before you leave the next day!
